Day 1 – Drive from Kigali City to Akagera National Park
Pick up location on this day can be at any place of your preference, but which has to be communicated in advance. It can be with in Kigali or the towns on the Eastern highway that leads to the park. It takes 2 hours from Kigali to Akagera National Park. The greenery along the way makes it so calming and you will barely notice how the 2 hours may have elapsed to find yourself already at the park. Such and more are the beauties of countryside drives in this land of a thousand hills!
Check into the lodge, have lunch and head out for the afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema. You are in the heart of nature while on this boat whose ride spots you to those big animals which you may not have had a chance of finding yourself so close to when not in a zoo. Sights of the birds flying over, elephants playing by the shores, lonely buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles and others that the jungles might flaunt you, are among those to expect while on a boat on Lake Ihema. After the boat ride on Lake Ihema, return to the lodge in the evening for relaxation and dinner before the night’s rest.
Day 2 – Game drive and return to Kigali
Early morning after breakfast, check out and leave the lodge to catch sight of the jungle dwellers. Although not guaranteed, the most fascinating thing about game drives in national parks, Akagera in particular, is having animals cross right in front of you. On your animal check list, expect to tick off the Zebras, elephants, unspecified number of birds, warthogs, baboons, vervet monkeys, bushbucks, Rhinos, buffaloes, elands. Lions and Leopards are so elusive but with some luck, we can stumble upon one or a number of them. The game trails continue up to the northern and exiting gate of the park which will imply checking out of the park to have lunch at a nearby local restaurant or drive straight to Kigali for a late lunch before drop off at your hotel/airport.
